What is Tough Zebra and why do we believe it was important to spend so much time and effort to create this product? Well, here is a summary of how this whole project came to be. It all started one year ago when tired of my sedentary lifestyle, I decided to get back in shape and hit the gym. Of course, it’s not easy to change life habits and I had a hard time at first, but gym workouts started to be very enjoyable very soon. Well, except for those long cardio sessions on the treadmill and cycling machines. I would get bored and lose motivation. I could watch a show but I felt that it takes away my focus and slow down my pace. Listening to fast music was actually good and would hype me up, but I felt something was missing, something more visually and mentally stimulating. That’s when the idea of "cardio gamification" came to my mind.
Being a creative director, I had worked as a photographer, motion graphics artist, and animator. I thought about an interactive app that could put you in a virtual world as you run on the treadmill and listen to your favourite music. I set up a meeting with my friend Bruce, who is a software architect and a health and fitness enthusiast. He loved the idea and we had long discussions about how this can make cardio workouts more efficient and optimized, more of a social activity and in general a lot more fun. We wanted to create an app we would enjoy using ourselves.
We recruited a small group of developers and started hacking away on this dream application. Of course, creating something new and different is not an easy task. There is no right and wrong way of doing things and options are endless but we are pleased with what we have now and hoping for early 2020 release.
